Music mogul Mathew Knowles offers daylong “Boot Camp” on breaking into the music industry

Sep 12, 2014

Mathew Knowles, the legendary, GRAMMY® Award-winning record-label executive and executive producer of top-selling female R&B group Destiny’s Child and father of superstar entertainers Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, will share his knowledge of the entertainment business in a day-long, intensive boot camp on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Houston Community College Central.

The boot camp, called The Entertainment Industry: How Do I Get In? offers attendees a fascinating, insider’s view of the entertainment industry from someone who knows it from top to bottom: Knowles has spent more than 20 years in every aspect of the music industry and has a demonstrated and spectacular history of success. The daylong boot camp will allow attendees to tap Knowles’ vast entertainment and music business expertise and leave with real information, contacts and strategies for their own successful entertainment endeavors.

“I’ve been in the music and entertainment business more than 20 years and I know how it works,” says Knowles, founder and president of Music World Entertainment, a recording studio, media center and entertainment complex near downtown Houston. “I am able to save someone who wants to know what to do to get in a lot of legwork and time... time that it took me years to learn.”

The boot camp is for people wanting to navigate the ultra-competitive and complex entertainment field, which includes music recording, staging, producing, distribution and many other behind-the-scenes professions, but are unsure how or where to start.

Current or aspiring entertainers, songwriters, musicians, composers, writers, producers, managers, sound or engineering technicians, publicists, attorneys, financial planners, fashion stylists, hair dressers, photographers, editors, accountants and a myriad of other entertainment-industry hopefuls are invited to attend. The boot camp takes place in the HCC Central’s Heinen Theatre, 3517 Austin St., Houston, TX 77004.

The daylong boot camp represents Knowles newest foray into the higher-educational arena. Knowles, a graduate of Fisk University in Tennessee, has taught college music-business courses at other higher-education institutions in Houston and across the country.

However, Knowles’ September 13 boot camp at Houston Community College Central symbolizes his first music course at a community college – as well as his first course at an institution he also attended: Knowles took several business and music courses at HCC in the early 1990s to strengthen his grasp on running his own successful music label.

“I took these courses and I got a lot out of them. I thought they were fantastic,” Knowles says. “Because my passion truly is in teaching and passing on what I know, I am proud to be able to come back and offer this one-day course.”

Enrollment in the daylong boot camp is $199 a person, $99 for students and $250 at the door the day of the event. All attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion and Knowles’ reference booklet of industry definitions, contacts and additional useful information.

Tickets will be sold on a first-come, firsts-served basis. Those who purchase their tickets first will be placed closest to the stage, as theater seating is limited.

Lunch, which takes place from noon to 1 p.m., is on own your own, but will be available through various vendors near the theater.
