Learning Communities for Health Sciences

What is a Learning Community?

Learning Community (LC) is simply a group of students who
are co-enrolled in two or more courses linked by a common
theme.

HCC is launching six new LC in the Fall of 2011 for students
going into health care professions. The focus of these LC is
to make learning relevant to students life and their preparation
for professional schools.

How?

  • Case studies will be used as individual or group projects
to bring together the material from the two linked courses,
to help students practice how to do case studies for their
    advanced clinical courses.
  • Students will work on real-life problems that deal with
common course content. This is called problem-based
learning and is used widely in health care institutions.
  • Computer skills will also be relevant to keeping up with the
digital age. All LC courses will be web-enhanced. Students
will access course material, email and video from HCC
e-learning platform of Moodle or Blackboard.

Health Science LC Advantage

Why be part of the Health Science Learning Community?

  • Study with the students who have the common goal of
    pursuing health sciences careers.
  • Find common bonds between the paired courses that
will make the material more interesting and relevant to
    your major.
  • Experience a greater emphasis on the clinical  aspects.
  • Contact a designated counselor who will provide
    up-to-date information on health careers.
  • Join the "Science Club at Central" for extended learning
    and leadership activities.
  • Take advantage of special interest program like TEAS
boot camp, PCAT preparation and interviewing tips.
Free TEAS Prep & no registration required:
9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon, LHSB 100 at Central College
*Doors open at 8:30 AM for admission on a first come/
    first served basis
    May 16th - Math
    May 19th - Reading Comprehension
    May 21st - Science
