Speech & Communications
At the dawn of the 21st century we're experiencing an explosion in the field of communication – across cultures, across the world, in business, in journalism, in personal contacts, communication is now instantaneous, and carries unprecedented impact. From traditional newspapers and speeches, to broadcast news, TV and radio, teleconferencing, streaming video, email, blogs, and texting, its never been more challenging to make our communications heard and understood. Giving our students technical skills to succeed is vital, but we consider it a high calling to prepare students to be thoughtful, curious, critical, creative and skillful practitioners in whatever field of communication they choose.
Our class offerings fall into two areas - communications, covering print and electronic media, and speech, focused on communicating clearly and persuasively in person. A small sampling of our classes would include:
-
Journalism, editorial and feature writing, editing, production layout
-
Mass media, including radio and TV announcing, scriptwriting, television production and broadcast journalism
-
Public Relations and advertising
-
Public speaking and group communication
-
Business and professional communication
-
Voice and diction, debate, interpretive reading
We also offer our students internships and of course, the option of working on our award-winning school newspaper, The Egalitarian. For more information, see the "All About" menu in the column to your right, or call us at 713-718-6600.
