The Egalitarian is returning to HCC in 2014-2015

May 28, 2014

The Egalitarian, HCC's student newspaper that began in 1974, is coming back.

Fredrick Batiste, the new HCC Central communications instructor, director of the Egalitarian and a college student-publications veteran, is seeking interested students from all six of HCC's colleges to help resume publishing the district-sponsored publication, which has been on hiatus for more than a year.

Here's his message to HCC students, which soon will be seen on posters and on social media sites throughout the district:

Are you someone with a passion for being in the know? Do you have an eye for detail? Are you a social-media master? If so, then joining The Egalitarian staff is for you.

The Egalitarian, Houston Community College's student newspaper, is looking for talented writers, photographers, columnists, cartoonists, graphic designers, web geniuses and just about any other talented student interested in covering the news and events that shape the lives of HCC students.

The Egalitarian is open to all currently enrolled HCC students at all HCC campuses. For more information, contact Fredrick Batiste at 713.718.6016 or e-mail at

Until his hiring at HCC Central last year, Batiste served as the Office of Student Media Publications Assistant at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Batiste helped supervise the award-winning work of student editors of The Southern Digest, the university's twice-weekly student newspaper (click here for details).

Since his arrival, Batiste has been busy teaching communications courses at HCC Central and lining up vendors and other details necessary for a successful Egalitarian relaunch.

Batiste has plans to make the Egalitarian both a traditional newsprint and online publication, a first for the district. For more details, please contact him at 713.718.6016 or e-mail at
