HCC Central Fitness Center set to open in May

It's been a long wait for the fitness section of the San Jacinto Memorial Building to open. Passersby would notice all the new state-of-the-art Precor exercise equipment waiting for someone to take on to begin his or her road to health and wellness. But the door was always locked. And the final touches never seemed to be final.

Now comes word that the triangular-shaped fitness center - complete with three, 55-inch, flat-screen TVs and a full row of treadmills, stairclimbers and ellipticals - will open in May. The fitness center has expanded and features well-appointed locker rooms and showers. It is positioned along what once was an outdoor, brick-arched area of the San Jac when it was a high school. The gym is just beyond the row of brick arches.

Those who remember the indoor pool next to the gym, however, need not look for it.

It's gone. Classrooms and offices now rest atop of the pool, which was filled with cement.

Prices for gym membership are excellent. Individual yearly membership is $100. For HCC employees, that amounts to 12 payments of $8.32 a month or $4.16 a pay period. Family yearly memberships are $125, or 12 payments of $10.40 a month or $5.20 a pay period. Family membership includes a spouse and dependent children between the ages of 16 and 24. Children over 24 are eligible to purchase membership at the student/individual rate.

Memberships for those outside HCC are $20 per month. By the HCC fiscal year, memberships are $75 for fall semester and $75 for the spring semester. The summer semester is $50 dollars.
