HCC Central Culinary Arts student receives $5,000 scholarship

May 28, 2014

Toya Terry Conwright, an HCC Central culinary arts student, received a $5,000 College Hospitality and Culinary Arts Scholarship from the Greater Houston Restaurant Association.

According to the GHRA's website, "selection of a GHRA Hospitality and Culinary Arts Scholarship is based on many factors, with special emphasis on the question and essay segment, which deals with the student's philosophy, goals and academic achievements, as well as motivation to serve and succeed in this industry."

Conwright says she received a call on May 13th from Steve Swafford, a GHRA board member, informing her of her scholarship win. She then shared the good news with HCC Central Culinary Arts chef instructor Christy Sykes.

"I am very humbled and excited that they picked my entry as the winner, and I wanted to thank you personally for your recommendation and most importantly your continued support," Conwright wrote to Sykes. "Thanks for believing in me and my efforts as a student at HCC!"

Conwright will be honored with other scholarship recipients, 2013-2014 GHRA board members and the GHRA Founders Club at the GHRA President's dinner, June 19th, at the Houston City Club. She will use the funds to continue her culinary arts education.
