The Interior Design program at HCC Central is expanding and moving to a stylish location on the 3rd floor of the Fine Arts Center (FAC) to begin the spring semester of 2015. Students seeking to start or enhance their career opportunities in this exciting field will now take classes at 3517 Austin Street.

What do interior designers do?

As an interior designer, you will design spaces that functional, safe and dynamic for almost every type of building: Single-family homes, kitchen and bath spaces, offices, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and more. As an interior designer you will select and specify material finishes, color palettes, textiles, furnishings and lighting to create interiors that are aesthetically pleasing and meet the needs of the end user.

Where would I work?

There are many options in this versatile field: Residential design firms, kitchen and bath design studios, commercial design firms, interior design showrooms and as a manufacturer’s representative. You may also want to start your own business as a self-employed interior designer.

How much can I earn?

$22.89 an hour; $47,000 a year (Median salary – 2012 Bureau of Labor Statistics). Job growth: 13% annually (as fast as average).

What does HCC Central offer?

Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design (65 Credits)

Level 2 Certificate – Kitchen and Bath Design Professional (45 credits)

The program is accredited by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA supported status)

Level 1 Certificate – Interior decorating (21 credits)

The program is accredited by Certified Interior Decorators International

Marketable Skills Award – Interior Design Communication (12 credits)

HCC Interior Design graduates are highly sought after because of their high level of technical skills and theoretical design concepts.

How long is the program?

Two years for the Associate of Applied Sciences degree; one year for certificates and one semester for the Marketable Skills Award.
