FAQ

In the schedule, the MATH 0312 classes are only offered 1 day a week for 1 hour while all other math classes meet twice a week (MW or TTH) for 1.5 hours or more. Is this a mistake?

- Actually, there is no mistake. However, you may not be reading the class' full schedule correctly. When you look at the course schedule, look at the Class Registration Number (CRN) on the left, then make note that the MATH 0312 classes have 3 class meetings listed under/next to each CRN. That is because MATH 0312 classes have a lab. So, for example CRN 72958 (pg. 139 of the class schedule) meets Tuesday and Thursday 7:00A - 9:00A. On Tuesday 7:00A - 9:00A in room JDB 307 which is the lecture room and on Thursdays students have a split schedule 7:00A-8:00A in JDB 307 (lecture) and 8:00A-9:00A in JDB 312 which is our computer classroom. You may also want to take a look at the Biology, Chemistry and GUST 0341 classes, all have lab portions in their curriculum and are therefore scheduled the same way (two or three meeting time assigned to one CRN). When you enroll for a course, you enroll using the CRN and are therefore agreeing to all meeting times associated with that number.

I took Calculus in high school but when I did my placement test, I tested into a Developmental mathematics class. How can skip developmental and take a college level mathematics course?

- The only way to “skip” any classes is to test into the higher level course. Therefore, you must retest. The Central College Mathematics department does not administer assessment tests or placement exams for courses below MATH 1316. (Contact the Testing Center for more information regarding testing schedules and retest eligibility.) See the Mathematics Placement Flow Chart.

I took Calculus in high school but when I did my placement test, I tested into a College Algebra. I completed my College Algebra class but now how can skip Trigonometry and take Pre-Calculus (or skip Pre-Calculus and take Calculus I)?

- The only way to “skip” any classes is to test into the higher level course. Therefore, you must retest. The Central College Mathematics department does not administer assessment tests or placement exams for courses below MATH 1316. However, placement tests can be given to students that met the requirements set forth in the Departmental Placement Exam Guidelines. (You may also want to look at the Mathematics Placement Flow Chart.) If you are interested in taking Mathematics classes at Central College, you MUST bring your documentation to the Central College Mathematics Department office located at 1215 Holman, Suite 310, speak with either Tim Sever, Department Chair or Eddie Gallaher, Division Secretary, to schedule an appointment to test.

Why can’t I do my homework or access the internet for e-mail in JDB 312?

- JBD 312 is an Electronic Classroom not an Open Lab. Students needing internet access, a quiet area to study or tutoring services are welcomed to use JDB 300, The Math Lab.

Registration ended yesterday but I need to REALLY need to get in a MATH class, how can I get in?

- It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of and adhere to the registration deadlines. After registration ends, the last day to add/drop/swap , the Mathematics Department is NOT obligated to allow students to continue enrolling late. If the class has reached the enrollment capacity, you WILL NOT GET IN.

Registration ends next week, but the class I need has reached it’s enrollment capacity. I REALLY need that class, what can I do to get in?

- It is our policy that students will not be allowed admittance into courses that have reached enrollment capacity. If the class you wish to register for is at capacity, and therefore closed, you may continue to check the online class schedule to see when/if space becomes available and the course reopens. If space becomes available, you have until registration ends (see Academic Calendar) to enroll in the course.

How can I get on the waiting list for the class I'm trying to get in?

- At this time, the HCC Central Mathematics Department no longer utilizes a waiting list. If the class you want to enroll in has reached enrollment capacity, you will need to wait until space becomes available and the class reopens (which is not guaranteed), or choose to register for another course.
