Child Development Lab School

 

Mission:

The central purpose and mission of the Laboratory School for Child Study and Development is to provide a high quality early care and education demonstration site for early childhood teacher training at Houston Community College. According to National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the professionalization of teaching begins first with the proper training and guided practice of pre-service early childhood educators. As a NAEYC accredited Early Childhood Associate Degree program, we aim to provide for our prospective educators, a rigorous instructional curriculum, innovative learning opportunities, and a strong preparation for employment in the child care industry.

Vision:

Our vision is for the Laboratory School to be recognized as a school of choice among the early care and education options available to HCC parenting students, faculty, staff, as well as, the general community in the Midtown area. We will establish a special niche focus and serve as a model for early STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). We will attain the highest level on the Texas Rising Star quality rating system and follow the most current NAEYC guidelines for best practices.

Aims:

The aims of the HCC Laboratory School’s educational program are to: a) encourage each child’s natural curiosity; b) develop his/her intellectual capacity; and c) foster creativity through early STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning experiences and opportunities. We will promote school readiness by facilitating growth in all three domains, physical, cognitive, and social-emotional. We foster parent engagement and empowerment by helping parents regularly participate in the learning process and providing access to additional resources in the community.

HCC Child Development Lab School serves children between 6 weeks old and 5 years old. The center is licensed to serve 143 children.

HCC Child Development Lab School is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Curriculum

 

Our program is play-based and emphasizes the 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, and creativity. We currently use the High Reach Learning program for our youngest learners and the theme-focused Creative Curriculum for our preschool classes. Each is based on well-known theories of learning and recent research on brain development. Both emphasize discovery and child-initiated learning. In addition however, we use the quality instructional practices that are associated with the Texas School Ready! Program in order to prepare children for kindergarten.
